John Wick

Last updated on March 17th, 2017 at 09:30 pm

He’s Back

John Wick is a stylish action movie about an ex-hitman (Keanu Reeves) who comes out of retirement when he is attacked in his own home, his car stolen, and his dog killed. This starts a chain of events that leads John Wick back down the path of his old profession and drags him back into the game.

A Refreshing Action Flick

John Wick is an action film that blends the neo-noir genre with indirect humor in that it’s an action movie that comes across as dark and serious yet makes fun of itself and its genre simultaneously. John Wick goes in knowing what kind of movie it is and doesn’t have a problem with making fun of the logistics of its own content so to say. This movie knows it’s one of those action movies that will not make complete sense and is not realistic, so at times in the movie it pokes fun at its own logic. It balances out inside humor like that with a decent plot that flows fluidly for an action movie and that’s what makes this movie enjoyable. One big thing to note about this movie is that it doesn’t try to be over the top. There are no big explosions or crazy action scenes that look like it would require major sets. John Wick stays low key, sticking with simple combat scenes with some slightly over the top moves, but never goes way beyond that. This isn’t like a Transformers movie where major parts of cities are getting blown up or where there is heavy use of CG. This movie is relatively simple and that’s interesting to note. It’s actually refreshing to watch a movie like this that comes off more down to earth than most action movies out. One last thing to note is that although this movie is more of a generic action movie, it does attempt to establish a decent plot while doing some creative world building to keep the audience engaged. I won’t say what it is, but you’ll notice at a certain point in this movie the writers try to establish a little bit of a universe for this movie for the type of character that John Wick is.

No Complaints

I don’t have any negative things to say about this movie. Due to the fact John Wick pokes fun at its own genre with how it handles its logic, I feel that excuses the kinds of inconsistencies that could be addressed usually in action movies.

John Wick Verdict

Overall John Wick is an intriguing and fascinating action movie that manages to be fresh in a genre where plots are predictable and presuppositions are already made before the movie is even seen. It is nice seeing Keanu Reeves back on the big screen doing an entertaining movie like this even if it’s not Academy Award type of material. If you’re looking for a good action movie to see, I feel confident enough to say John Wick won’t disappoint.

Hey everyone! This week we discuss The Accountant, a film by Gavin O'Connor and starring Ben Affleck, Anna Kendrick and J.K. Simmons. Late Friday night, we were pleasantly surprised by The Accountant, which is not the film it is promoted to be. Rather than your typical action film, The Accountant offers much more that films like Jason Bourne were lacking.
