Cloverfield 2!? Surprise?
J.J. Abrams you sneaky little devil. We thought you were going to take a break after delivering an amazing Star Wars film. Only a few weeks after the release of The Force Awakens, a brand new trailer hit the internet, surprising most of us.
If you are unfamiliar with the original Cloverfield, it is basically a found-footage monster movie taking place in New York City. The 2008 sci-fi horror film was directed by Matt Reeves, and written by Drew Goddard. The film follows a group of young adults attempting to rescue a friend as chaos envelopes Manhattan. Similar to 2014’s Godzilla, the film decided not to reveal the monster in full until the very end of the film. The found-footage aspect added to the realism and suspense making Cloverfield a pioneering film in the monster movie genre.
According to an interview with J.J. Abrams, he describes the surprise film as a ‘blood relative’ to the original Cloverfield. This fact is pretty obvious considering 10 Cloverfield Lane is not employing the found-footage style of filming used by director Matt Reeves. The film introduces us to three strangers that appear to be living in a small bunker similar to that of the Netflix comedy Unbreakable. The three strangers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead, John Goodman, John Gallagher Jr.) seem to get along very well, playing music, boardgames, and puzzles. Apart from that the lead character (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) seems bored by the mundane life they lead. The lively music playing in the background takes a sharp turn halfway through the trailer. Flashes of far more disturbing scenes light up the screen depicting Mary’s character attempting to escape the bunker. She overtakes John Goodman’s character and runs up a flight of stairs with a heavy door. As she peers into the outside world, John Goodman’s character screams for her to stop. When Mary’s character looks outside the window she sees the unexpected.

Thoughts on 10 Cloverfield Lane
Personally, I’m dying to see this film. Cloverfield was one of my favorite monster movies growing up and I have wanting a sequel for so long. Obviously, this isn’t a direct sequel, but honestly I’ll take it. It looks like its going to spin the Cloverfield monster in a different way. The poster for the upcoming film says, “Monsters Come In Many Forms”. To me, this may be a reference to the smaller, yet equally terrifying, monsters that came from the main Cloverfield monster. There is one giant monster, but it has the ability to create life. This is something that can possibly be explored in 10 Cloverfield Lane. I also love the idea of a post-apocalyptic world where people are hiding underground in an attempt to return to normalcy. I definitely want to know what lies outside the comfort of that bunker. Thankfully there are plenty of questions tied to this film, something that is missing in a lot of film marketing (cough cough Batman v. Superman). Definitely check this one out and watch the original if you can, its amazing!
