SNOW WHITE & THE HUNTSMAN PART 2?
Back in 2012, Universal Studios released Snow White & The Huntsman starring Kristen Stewart and Chris Hemsworth as the titular characters. The film told a much darker origin for the princess that greatly contrasted the Disney make-over we all grew up with. I remember leaving the theater after watching the film and actually enjoying it. It was a fairly average film with some great performances by Charlize Theron as Ravenna and Chris Hemsworth as The Huntsman. What I absolutely hated about the film was Kristen Stewart’s bland portrayal of Snow White. It was so awful. Having a weak main character was one of the main reasons the film didn’t do as well as it could have.
UNIVERSAL FRANCHISES WAR
Ironically, in this new age of franchises, Universal has elected to create a sequel to Snow White & The Huntsman WITHOUT Kristen Stewart. It’s almost laughable. That poor girl. The supporting cast has overshadowed the main character and are moving forward with a spinoff of their own adventure. Joining the fight again Charlize Theron’s evil queen Ravenna are Emily Blunt as the ice queen Freya and Jessica Chastain’s warrior Sara.
The Huntsman Winter’s War honestly feels like another cash grab in Universal’s desperate attempts to jumpstart another franchise. They have been trying to piece together a franchise with the famous monsters (Dracula, Mummy, etc.) and this is no different.
MAYBE WE LET THIS ONE GO?
One issue I had with the trailer was the introduction of this new ice queen. The trailer shows us an ice castle in the ice caps, and outbursts of icy rage from the queen. Should I just start singing “Let It Go”? I enjoyed Frozen for what it was. I think it’s kind of been blown out of proportion these days (another sequel that will feel like a cash grab). I almost can’t take The Huntsman Winter’s War seriously.
WISHFUL THINKING
Honestly, I hope they prove me wrong and put out an excellent film. Jessica Chastain and Emily Blunt are two great additions to a strong cast. I loved Emily in Sicario last year and expect her to play her role wonderfully. Christ Hemsworth has proven himself to be a strong lead and was one of the better aspects of the original film. Charlize Theron is one of my favorite actresses and she played a truly menacing and complex villain. I’m looking forward to seeing more of the evil queen.
I’ll probably end up watching The Huntsman Winter’s War. When has assembling an outstanding cast ever disappointed us before…?
I’m interested in what you guys think! Did you enjoy Snow White? Do you prefer the Disney version? Are you looking forward to this film? Let us know!
