“Forget Everything You Know”
If you were watching Jimmy Kimmel last night, you caught the very first teaser trailer for Marvel’s Doctor Strange. This is a film that has been sort of under the radar with all the buzz about Captain America: Civil War. It feels very similar to last year’s Marvel films, where Avengers: Age of Ultron definitely felt more hyped than Ant-man.
Doctor Strange tells the story of Steven Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), a renowned surgeon who has immense amounts of wealth, but struggles with an empty life. He gets into a tragic accident that affects his ability to properly perform surgery. Lost and disoriented, Steven goes on a quest to find enlightenment, and a cure for his mangled hands. He journeys to the ends of the earth and finds the Ancient One (Tilda Swinton). She gives Steven the chance to repair his affliction through the use of magic. In the trailer, Steven is urged to “Forget Everything” he knows as he delves into a brand new world. Through this encounter with the Ancient One, Steven finds a different way to help those in need and is the only person capable of stopping whatever catastrophe Earth will encounter.
The trailer gave us our first glimpse into the world of Doctor Strange focusing heavily on Steven Strange’s origin.
YOU’RE A WIZARD STEVEN!
Doctor Strange is Marvel’s official foray into the realm of magic and sorcery. Thus far, Marvel has avoided talking about this in past films referring to magic as “science you don’t understand yet”. I don’t really care what you call it, what happens in the Thor films is definitely magic. The introduction of magic allows future Marvel films to expand into a new frontier that is further explored within the pages of comic books. It’s an exciting time to be a Marvel fan!
More Like Benedict “Mmmm”berbatch
If you know me, you know I love me some Benedict Cumberbatch. He’s an extremely talented actor and I’ll pretty much watch anything with his involvement. It could be an 2-hr informercial for shaky weights starring Benedict Cumberbatch. Yeah, I’m in. I’m extremely happy some Doctor Strange prospects passed up on the lead role for the film. In my opinion, Benedict Cumberbatch is the PERFECT Doctor Strange akin to Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool and Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man. The man even perfected an English accent for the role and it sounds just as amazing as his suave British accent. Does he have any limits? I think not.
Marvel’s Inception
Just from the trailer you can tell that the filmmakers were extremely influenced by Christopher Nolan’s Inception. The trailer footage presents an extremely skewed reality where worlds open up like kaleidoscopes, and New York City looks like an extremely complex jig-saw puzzle. There is one scene in particular that looks similar to the scene in Inception where the city scape is mirrored in the sky.
If you loved Inception’s mind-bending visuals, you will probably enjoy Doctor Strange.
Look Out For Doctor Strange
Right now, Captain America: Civil War is in the foreground of everyone’s mind, but look out for Doctor Strange in November. With the Avengers splitting up, and magic’s introduction to the films, this looks to be an extremely pivotal year for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. What did you think about the trailer?
