Watch: Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales Trailer

The…Fifth Pirates Film?

The first teaser for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales has dropped! This makes the fifth official installment of the Pirates franchise. I’m excited to see this, but also confused as to how this franchise is still going. After the third, and definitely after the fourth film, I would think Pirates would be done with, but I guess Disney still has ideas for what they can do with Pirates. How long does this franchise plan on going on for? Well, rhetorical question aside, lets get into the actual teaser.

Intriguing With a Side of Lackluster CGI

There’s not much footage to watch.

There’s no Jack Sparrow to be seen anywhere, but we get a look at who he’ll face off: Captain Salazar, played by none other than Javier Bardem. You can always expect great performances from Javier Bardem. I’m hoping he’s not the only compelling reason to see this film. He seems like a character to look forward to seeing, but I can’t stand the tacky CGI they use to make him, and his crew of pirates, look…ghost-like?

They are supposed to be ghost pirates if I’m not mistaken. The CGI just looks weird and kind of sticks out a bit, like a sore thumb. He kills off a ship full of British soldiers and then talks to the only young man on this ship being held captive, asking if he knows who Captain Jack Sparrow is.

The teaser then ends with Captain Salazar asking this young man, played by Brenton Thwaites, to deliver a message to Jack Sparrow for him: “Death will come straight for him.” With that message and a “please” from Captain Salazar, we have our first teaser.

I’m looking forward to seeing more footage and how the film will turn out, but I’m cautious. The last film, On Stranger Tides, was okay and didn’t really attract my attention, like Curse of the Black Pearl. The general consensus seems to be that is the best Pirates film out there. We shall see. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales comes out on May 27, 2016.
