Whitewashing?
When Scarlett Johansson was cast as The Major, the outcry of the overreactive internet filled the screens. What you might be surprised by is how un-Western Ghost In The Shell is. From the neon kanji and katakana signs to the threatening robot geisha, Ghost in the Shell trailer is filled in Japanese iconography.
The artistic style of the film is very refreshing and in-keeping with the original anime. Just check out this anime to movie trailer comparison. Pretty amazing.
Why Scarlett Is The Right Choice
True, many can make the argument that Scarlett is the wrong choice for the lead role in Ghost In The Shell. Judging by the title, you know I’m going to disagree. In most cases, I would agree that the role belongs to a more traditional choice but hear me out.
Scarlett Johansson is a powerhouse name, bringing many butts to the seats. She’s extremely popular as Black Widow in the MCU. She even lead Lucy which puts her in a similar role as a lead actress in an action film. Despite the terrible writing, the film did fairly well mostly thanks to Scarlett.
The Ghost In The Shell trailer only solidifies that Scarlett’s past experience will greatly improve the film. Many Japanese movie-goers are already sharing positive feedback according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Final Thoughts
The Ghost In The Shell trailer has given me great confidence in the film despite the initial backlash it received. The film looks stunning and is in keeping with the original anime.
We will see if all proves well in March 2017.
